Marcondes and Samantha De Assis opened The Coffee Bar in Marshfield bright and early this past December. In fact, they are one of few coffee shops around that opens at 4:30 am, an absolute must for those days when the baby just won’t sleep.

Independently operated, The Coffee Bar provides a homey atmosphere with a few tables, a pair of armchairs, and a TV tuned to the news. They offer close to 10 iced coffee options and at least 5 freshly brewed hot coffee options. Serving New England Coffee, among other specialty beans, The Coffee Bar offers flavored coffees without syrup, though they have plenty of options if you’re craving a more indulgent drink.

I stopped by on a Wednesday around 11 am, my sleeping 9-month-old in tow, overdue for my second cup. Samantha greeted me with a huge smile and quickly poured me a customer favorite: mocha cinnamon swirl coffee. Thankfully, they offer almond milk, which is a must-have for me. The coffee was subtly sweet and well-brewed.

Despite the shop’s small size, they have a sizeable menu. Muffins are baked fresh daily in-house. “We buy the rest of the pastries. On the weekend, we have even more options. The crumb cake is super popular. On the weekends, we have chocolate croissants and hecklas–they’re upside down cinnamon rolls with frosting on the bottom, people love those a lot,” said Samantha. They also offer a full range of breakfast sandwiches with all eggs and bacon cooked in-house, so everything is fresh and made to order.

The lemon poppy seed muffin I bought didn’t make it home, as it was greedily devoured in my minivan. I did manage to save a blueberry muffin and a chocolate chip muffin for my big kids, and of course, a slice of the outrageous crumb cake that is covered in a full inch of buttery crumb topping. To share, of course.

One of the best things about The Coffee Bar is its location at 1289 Ocean Street in Marshfield. Drive like you’re heading toward Gerard Farm and then keep going another 2 minutes. It’s less than a 10-minute drive from Tumblefun Gymnastics, the Ventress Memorial Library, the skate park, and Rexhame beach. This means that when you’re doing the carpool shuffle you don’t have to settle for the Dunk’s drive-thru. Good coffee and a friendly smile are just a few minutes further down the road.

I’m already looking forward to my next trip to The Coffee Bar and I know just what I’m going to order: a big cup of Highlander Grog (a blend of caramel, butterscotch, and hazelnut) and a heckla, or two.

The Coffee Bar 1289 Ocean St., Marshfield MA Open weekdays 4:30 am to 3:00 pm, Saturdays/Sundays 6:00 am to 2:00 pm. They accept credit cards and parking is easy. Follow them on Facebook for your daily helping of coffee memes.
