South Shore Locavores

Calling all Locavores

Join us! Everyone is welcome.

Where does your food come from? How does it get to you? How healthy is it? How can you support local farmers and food producers through your food purchases?

The Kingston Public Library and edible South Shore & South Coast have teamed up to host an ongoing series of programs about the phenomenon of “eating locally.” Please join us in the discovery of our local food.

April 17, 2014: Soil Health
May 15, 2014: Antibiotics in Your Food

Soil Health: With the ground starting to soften after this long hard winter, many South Shore gardeners are itching to get outside and start working the soil. Whether it’s a kitchen garden or a perennial border, taking a little time to build up the soil before you put those first seeds or seedlings into the ground can yield huge rewards during the growing season. Longtime organic gardener Frank Albani, widely known and respected for his work at Soule Homestead and the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA), will share his experience, tips, and tricks to help you make sure your own local crop gets off to a great start.

Vendors and participants donate great door prizes!! (Please let us know if you’d like to be a speaker at any of the programs or would like to offer a door prize.)

Everyone is welcome!

Please note: The South Shore Locavore’s program is run on a volunteer basis. Would you like to be more closely involved with the SSL gatherings? There are various ways you could help with preparing or running the sessions. If you’re interested in volunteering, let us know.

Love to cook? Please feel free to bring a dish to share to any of the gatherings. There will be time at the beginning and end of each meeting for Munching and Mingling.

TEAM UP AGAINST HUNGER: In an effort to help fight hunger on the South Shore, we will be collecting non-perishable foods at the beginning of each gathering to donate to the Greater Plymouth Food Warehouse.  If you can, please bring a can.

The gatherings are free. However, if you are able, donations of $0 to $10 will be gratefully accepted to help cover expenses. Any surplus will be used towards library book purchases. South Shore Locavores is a collaboration between the Kingston Public Library and edible South Shore & South Coast magazine.

Gather with us at 7:00pm
Beal House/Sampson Hall
222 Main Street, Kingston MA 02364

Besides the terrific speakers and demos, we’ll provide thorough topic-related resource lists complied by the Kingston Public Library for each session.
